Vitamin C – Nature’s Cheat Code

Share:

It’s common knowledge that vitamin C is one of the big hitters when it comes to supporting your body’s needs. Found in citrus fruits and vegetables such as broccoli and peppers, it’s a water soluble nutrient essential for your immune system, wound healing, aiding iron absorption, protecting cells from free radical damage, and encouraging collagen production.

And you don’t just have to eat it to enjoy gain from it. Topical vitamin C has become a staple in most skincare regimes in recent years, and with ULA’s shower mists you can now treat your whole body – and hair.

Skincare

Incorporating vitamin C into your skincare is a no-brainer for most skin types as it’s safe to use and has a long list of benefits.

One of the most important roles vitamin C offers is its antioxidant protection against free radicals. Free radicals are incomplete atoms that then search for other atoms from which they can steal from to replace their missing electron.

They’re generated by stressors such as environmental pollutants, smoking, alcohol, and sun exposure and can lead to significant skin damage and premature ageing.  Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, protect healthy skin cells by replacing the missing electron in the free radicals, rendering them harmless.

Vitamin C is also essential for collagen synthesis, providing skin with structure and elasticity, helping to reduce wrinkles and fine lines and healing wounds.

And it inhibits melanin production, reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation such as sunspots or acne scarring and helps retain water for a more radiant appearance.

In the shower

If a water filter such as ULA can remove most hard water minerals from your shower, throwing vitamin C into the mix is a beauty booster like no other.

Not only is vitamin C a powerful water softener, but it can also neutralise chlorine, protecting your skin from dryness and allowing your products to lather more and work harder with less waste.

It also restores the natural pH level of your skin and hair. While shower water has a slightly higher pH, ascorbic acid (aka vit. C) has a low pH that can bring your skin down to where it should be - around 4.7 to 5.75.

Haircare

Additionally, vitamin C traps moisture and tightens the cuticles around your hair root, protecting you from hair loss and nourishing your hair.

It has antibacterial properties that can soothe a dry and itchy scalp and its acidic nature helps get rid of pollution and product build-up making hair feel softer and brightening up blondes.

It’s ties with collagen production are important with hair health too, as collagen provides the necessary amino acids important for the growth and maintenance of hair follicles.

Collagen also helps in the production of keratin, a protein that determines hair thickness.

A spa-like sensation

On top of the very real benefits of incorporating this powerful antioxidant into your shower, using a vitamin C shower mist gives you an aromatherapy experience at home. This has the potential to elevate your mood and relieve anxiety.

It is also safe to use with other skin care actives, including AHAs, retinols, and SPF.

And while some use it in the morning to take advantage of its UV-protectant properties, it can work just as well for others at night, depending on your shower schedule and needs!
